After achieving the negative record of having the highest amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere in 2017, we are yet to reverse the shameful trend regarding climate change.
Current Status of Climate Change
The World Meteorological Organization has announced in their annual greenhouse gas bulletin, that the concentration of gases is still growing. In addition, carbon dioxide levels have exceeded 405 ppm, a figure that has been unprecedented in the last 3-5 million years. These worrying statistics were topped off with the information that CFC-11 – a banned gas – has been reappearing.
Unstoppable Climate Change
The fear that Prof Corinne Le Quéré of UEA has shared was not only to do with the major rise in carbon dioxide levels, but the impact on climate change this will have once we manage to get rid of these gases. Essentially, the emission of these gases will impact the climate for centuries, meaning that we are long behind in the process of tackling climate change.
Impact on Future Decisions
The report by WMO came at a reasonable time, in consideration of the upcoming COP24 meeting in Poland. The aim of the meeting is to enforce the Paris climate agreement and to speed up the process of fighting climate change.
